IBM launches new toolkit to avoid bias in decisions within AI algorithms

IBM launches tool aimed at detecting AI bias

The software service, which runs on the IBM Cloud, helps businesses manage AI models from IBM along with those built on frameworks from its competitors - such as Amazon and Microsoft - by explaining how AI makes decisions as the algorithms run.

The cloud-based service will detect bias and also explain how the artificial intelligence (AI) made the decision, IBM Research Vice President India and Singapore and CTO IBM India/South Asia Sriram Raghavan said.

IBM is launching a new tool which will check biases in algorithms and try to understand how and why they crept in, and how to mitigate them. "It will also detect bias that may come into decisions on account of multiple reasons", he said.

IBM is giving new transparency and control to the businesses who use AI and face potential risks from any flawed decision making, he added. "It's created to translate algorithmic research from the lab into the actual practice of domains as wide-ranging as finance, human capital management, healthcare, and education", they outlined. A final check will be carried out too, but the systems will be tracked for accuracy, performance and overall fairness, over time.

Reportedly, this initial release of the AIF360 Python package contains nine different algorithms, developed by the broader algorithmic fairness research community, to mitigate that unwanted bias.

IBM is also making available new consulting services to help companies design business processes and human-AI interfaces to further minimize the impact of bias in decision making.

Additionally IBM Research will release an AI bias detection and migration toolkit called Fairness 360 Kit for the open source community which will bring the tools and education needed to encourage global collaboration around addressing the issue of bias in AI. While other open-source resources have focused exclusively on checking for bias in training data, the IBM AI Fairness 360 toolkit created by IBM Research will help check for and mitigate bias in AI models.
