European Union leaders react to May's Brexit deal

Video Matthias Schrader EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier, arrives at the informal EU summit in Salzburg Aus

Despite reports of a friendly spirit at a summit in Salzburg, Austria, the fundamental differences remained.

Cabinet Office minister David Lidington said Britain was more than 85 percent of the way to agreeing a deal.

They've spent two days in Salzburg trying to do just that, but with no clear solution in sight, the sides have tried to ramp up pressure on each other.

British Prime Minister Theresa May told Leo Varadkar that she does not believe crucial negotiations on Brexit can be concluded by October, understands. Mostly because we have been focused on external border control and cooperation with third countries, which has brought down the number of irregular migrants from nearly 2 million in 2015 to fewer than 100.000 this year.

"We're ready for that eventuality, should it occur".

- German Chancellor Angela Merkel said "substantial progress" is needed over the next four weeks.

Alongside politicians, a growing number of businesses, unions, and other groups have begun to support a People's Vote, including the Community Union, which is one of the main unions representing Tata Steel's workers in the UK.

In response, May said Britain was preparing to leave the bloc without an agreement on the terms of its departure unless there is a proposal it deems acceptable.

At our EU27 working lunch today we had a good discussion on Brexit, which once again reconfirmed our full unity.

For Ireland, it's important not to undermine the hard-won peace after decades of sectarian tensions in neighbouring Northern Ireland.

Over dinner on Wednesday, May had her first opportunity to present to fellow leaders her plan for the post-Brexit trading relationship, which was published in July. She insisted her proposals - the so-called Chequers plan - is the only option left. "Our white paper remains the only serious and credible proposal on the table for achieving that objective", she said.

It's happening because the British people decided in a vote in 2016 that the United Kingdom should leave the EU.

May is sharply constrained domestically on Brexit, both in her party and in parliament. "Everybody shared the view that while there are positive elements in the Chequers proposal for economic cooperation, the suggested framework will not work - not least because it risks undermining the single market", Tusk told reporters.

Her proposal to follow European Union rules on trade in goods has provoked a fierce backlash among eurosceptics in her Conservative party, renewing speculation of a challenge to her leadership.

Speaking to BBC radio on the sidelines of an informal European Union summit in Salzburg, Joseph Muscat said there was "almost unanimous" backing among its leaders for a vote.

"Headlines around Brexit clearly look to be a bit more constructive and the retail data was phenomenal so there's no denying that the consumer is just propping things up", said Tim Graf, State Street Global Markets' EMEA Head of Macro Strategy.

So we will leave on the 29th of March, 2019, and there will be no second referendum.

Carmakers are anxious that port and motorway holdups could slow the movement of components and finished models, crippling output and adding costs, if Britain fails to reach agreement with the European Union over its departure from the bloc on March 29.
