Egypt resort couple's deaths 'inconclusive'

The Steigenberger Aqua Magic Hotel in Hurghada

John Cooper, 69, and his wife Susan, 63, from Burnley, died in the Red Sea city of Hurghada on 21 August.

Tests carried out in the United Kingdom on a British couple who died while on holiday in Egypt have been unable to establish the cause of their deaths.

The couple's daughter Kelly Ormerod, who was at the hotel, previously told the BBC she did not believe the symptoms her parents had exhibited were consistent with an E. coli infection.

Dr Adeley said through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office he would be requesting all relevant reports and documentation from a long list of public bodies in Egypt and from Thomas Cook.

The has revealed that the Egyptian investigation is likely to be the subject of a formal complaint and further action in due course as Kelly and her family have considerable concerns regarding the Egyptian claims that the cause of the deaths was E. coli.

The authorities in Egypt have said their forensic examinations showed the deaths were linked to E.coli bacteria.

Solicitors acting for the family, from Burnley, Lancashire, have now said that post mortems carried out on behalf on United Kingdom authorities had proven "inconclusive".

"An inquest is to be opened on the 18th September and the family are certain that the Coroner will undertake a rigorous investigation of all the circumstances surrounding the deaths to enable answers to be provided".

"Kelly and her family remain committed to establishing the true cause of John and Susan's deaths and holding those responsible to account".

Thomas Cook's own tests identified a high level of E.coli at the hotel, which would "explain the raised level of illness reported among guests".

Adjourning the hearing to allow for further inquiries to be made and the results of United Kingdom post-mortem examinations to be analysed, he said he would be asking the Egyptian authorities to "disclose" all reports and paperwork that related to the case.

Ms Ormerod attended the brief hearing at Preston Coroner's Court where James Adeley, senior coroner for Blackburn with Darwen, passed on his condolences as the inquests were opened and adjourned until a date to be fixed.

A BURNLEY couple on holiday in Egypt moved their granddaughter out of their hotel room hours before they died as a "musty smell" had left her feeling unwell.
