We’re ready to come up with a better backstop proposal — European Union negotiator

The next few days will be crucial for the eventual Brexit outcome and the future of the Prime Minister, with the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, expected to update ministers on the state of Article 50 negotiations with the European Union during an General Affairs Council meeting on Tuesday.

The Migration Advisory Committee report, which was commissioned in July 2017, is likely to inform the contents of the government's immigration white paper - something that will in turn heavily influence the UK's negotiation strategy with the EU.

The Prime Minister is expected to brief the other 27 leaders on proposals over dinner and they will then have a separate discussion on Thursday after she has left.

That has led to worries that Britain is heading for a "no-deal Brexit" that would see it revert to World Trade Organisation rules on trade and force it to pay tariffs on goods imported from the EU.

"Despite the talk of "improvements", the backstop being insisted upon by the European Union. still means a border down the Irish Sea although with different kinds of checks".

'We are ready to improve this proposal.

New research carried out by the Migration Advisory Committee on behalf of the Home Office found European Union migrant workers pay in £78,000 more than they take out in public services and benefits over their lifetime.

However, the DUP, who prop up May's government in the Commons, will not support any proposals that means a different system of regulations and checks in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. "We can also clarify that most checks can take place away from the border at a company premises or at the markets".

He explained: "What we are talking about here is not a border - not a land border, not a sea border; it is a set of technical checks and controls".

The former foreign secretary, who once compared the Irish border to that of Camden and Islington, said: "If we are to get out of this mess, and get the great British motor back on track, then we need to understand the Irish backstop, and how it is being used to coerce the United Kingdom into becoming a vassal state of Brussels".

Mr Barnier's comments came after Taoiseach Leo Varadkar had earlier told the Dail in Dublin: "I do not anticipate there will be any change to the EU's position or any change to our negotiating guidelines".

Proposals in these two areas "will need to be reworked and further negotiated", Mr Tusk said.

On Monday, Mrs May had framed the decision facing the country as a choice between her Chequers deal or no deal.

Meanwhile, Britain's prime minister says she wants to have a deal for the good of everyone in the country.

DUP Brexit spokesman Sammy Wilson had previously voiced unhappiness with some aspects of the plan.

The EU's backstop proposal has been rejected by the UK because it effectively creates a customs border in the Irish sea, while the UK's plan was rejected by the UK because it was temporary and applied to the whole of the UK, rather than only Northern Ireland.

He cited, for example, the idea that well-known firms could be given "trusted trader" status when they move containers across the border.

They would input the details of goods which are due to cross the border into a computer, affix an identifier to the vehicle, and this could be scanned electronically when it crosses the border.
