Sixers promoting Elton Brand to GM

Hours after Brett Brown told reporters on Tuesday that a new general manager would be hired by the start of the season, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported a decision had indeed been made. Brand, a two-time All-Star, played 17 seasons in the National Basketball Association.

Brown took the GM role on an interim basis, and the search for a new general manager has only recently heated up. According to Woj, the Sixers selected Elton Brand to lead the front office as it heads into the future.

Brown, who took the 76ers from 10 wins to the third seed in the Eastern Conference in just two seasons, agreed in May to a three-year contract extension that runs through the 2021-2022 season.

Brand replaces former GM and president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo, who resigned in June after what an investigation concluded was "careless and in some instances reckless" sharing of sensitive team information on Twitter.

After public reports of the Sixers being rebuffed in efforts to bring other high-profile personnel executives, such as Houston GM Daryl Morey and San Antonio GM R.C. Buford, the team seemed to be digging in for a much longer selection process that would last into the regular season. They both interviewed for the GM job.

He added: "The general manager situation had zero to do with us not being able to acquire one of those talents".

Brand also had been serving as GM of the Delaware Blue Coats, the 76ers' G League affiliate.

Brand, the former Duke star and No. 1 overall pick in the 1999 draft, was a 20 points-per-game scorer six times in his career and averaged a double-double in points and rebounds on six occasions.

Brand played in 1,058 career games over 18 seasons with the Bulls, the Los Angeles Clippers, Dallas, Atlanta and the Sixers.

In addition to elevating Brand, Wojnarowski reports that Philadelphia will also promote Alex Rucker to executive vice president, while keeping Ned Cohen on as assistant general manager and Marc Eversley as senior vice president of player personnel. Cohen and Eversley will retain their current roles, sources said.
