Kavanaugh accuser willing to testify before Senate committee, lawyer says

Editorial: Senate should delay vote on Kavanaugh

The president said Kavanaugh had "never had even a little blemish". It is encouraging that Kavanaugh and his accuser have both agreed to testify before the Senate, and that should delay any votes on his confirmation until senators and the public can evaluate the allegations and determine whether they raise legitimate concerns about his fitness for the court.

The White House reiterated its support for Kavanaugh, with spokeswoman Kerri Kupec saying in an email Monday that it stands by the nominee's denial.

The announcement, made under pressure from lawmakers to fully examine the new claims, will delay what had been a glide path toward confirmation for President Donald Trump's nominee.

The committee was due to hold a vote on Kavanaugh's nomination on Thursday. The FBI has I think gone through a process six times with him over the years where he went to higher and higher positions.

"Allowing this woman to be heard in sworn testimony, allowing Judge Kavanaugh to be heard in sworn testimony", Conway said that would acceptable, maybe as soon as this week before the Senate Judiciary Committee. "This has not changed". Kavanaugh and Judge locked the door and cranked up the music to keep anyone from hearing Ford yell for help, she recalls, and then Kavanaugh climbed on top of her on a bed, pinned her down and clumsily tried to pull off her clothes.

"I have received information from an individual concerning the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court", Feinstein said.

"She believes that these allegations obviously bear on his character and his fitness, and the denials of course bear on his character and fitness", Katz told NBC. "She should testify under oath and she should do it on Capitol Hill", Conway said.

Trump didn't mention the accusation or the accuser, but he said he wished Democrats hadn't waited until the last minute to come forward with the charge from Ford. Susan Collins, R-Maine, wouldn't say whether the vote should be postponed or whether she believes Ford.

Ford detailed her story in a letter sent to Feinstein in July. Patty Murray, D-Washington, said recently on Twitter that she first ran for the Senate "after my daughter and I watched Anita Hill being grilled by an all-male Judiciary Committee that didn't look anything like me or so many others across the country and that wasn't asking the questions so many of us wanted asked".

Dr Ford, 51, a clinical psychology professor at Palo Alto University in California, said: "I thought he might inadvertently kill me".

Sens. Jeff Flake of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of SC, both members of the Judiciary Committee, said they wanted to hear what Ford has to say before making a decision on confirming Kavanaugh.

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski told CNN late Sunday that the committee should consider delaying the vote.

"This is not something that came up during the hearings". She said President George H.W. Bush had asked the FBI to investigate Anita Hill's allegations against Thomas.

"I'm glad that chairman Grassley is following standard practice and regular order", McConnell said, referring to the chairman's plan to conduct "by the book with bipartisan interviews" of Kavanaugh and his accuser. Dianne Feinstein, has refused.

Another Democrat on the panel, Sen.

Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY, called for a delay in the vote, and two committee Republicans - all 11 on the GOP side are men - Sens.

"He said this did not happen and he's naturally very upset about it", Hatch said.

Donald Trump Jr. shared a meme mocking the sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in an Instagram post on Sunday, dismissing the "Dems and their usual nonsense".

Democratic Sen. Dick Durban said that the vote "must be postponed" until the FBI investigated the claims.
