Trump 'likely' to announce new China tariffs as early as Monday

Donald Trump

With the public comment period for the new round of tariffs expiring last week, President Trump said the duties will be imposed soon.

President Donald Trump has chose to impose tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods, two people briefed on the decision said, one of the most severe economic restrictions ever imposed by a USA president.

China responded by imposing tariffs on US products like beef and soybeans, a response that spooked the USA agriculture industry and angered Trump and other White House officials.

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said: "The President has been clear that he and his administration will continue to take action to address China's unfair trade practices".

Trump had already directed aides to proceed with tariffs, despite Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's attempts to restart trade talks with China, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday.

The timing of the actual application of the sanctions was not clear, but the move would mark the latest in an escalating trade war with Beijing as Trump seeks to combat what he sees as unfair trade practices from China.

"We encourage China to address the long standing concerns raised by the USA".

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In retaliation Beijing has pledged to hit back with tariffs on $60 billion of Us exports, including meat, coffee, furniture and vehicle parts.

"We have indeed received an invitation from the USA side".

The $200 billion tariff list included various internet technology products and other electronics, printed circuit boards, and consumer goods ranging from handbags to bicycles and furniture.

The upcoming tariffs will be on a list of items that included $200 billion worth of internet technology products and other electronics, printed circuit boards and consumer goods including Chinese seafood, furniture and lighting products, tires, chemicals, plastics, bicycles and vehicle seats for babies.

The Chinese foreign ministry said Thursday that it was invited to hold new talks.

Trump has also threatened another round of tariffs on $267 billion of Chinese goods.

"For the near term, this combination of tactics seems to signal that unless and until China comes to the table with significant actions on the issues the U.S.is hammering, the USA will keep tariff pressure going", said Claire Reade, a former US trade negotiator.

This year, imports from China through July were up almost 9 percent over the same period of 2017, according to US Census Bureau data. Depending on how the talks go, Liu may then speak with Trump.
