Spanish-speaking Taco Bell worker fired after refusing English-speaking customers

An unidentified worker refuses to take a woman's order in English at a Taco Bell restaurant in Hialeah this week

Taco Bell has fired an employee in Florida who refused to serve a customer this week because the woman was ordering in English.

Alexandria Montgomery says she wanted a quesadilla at Taco Bell in Hialeah on Wednesday night.

It depicted her and at least one other person in a auto at the drive-through window at a Taco Bell in Hialeah, a city north of Miami's airport that is predominantly Latino.

"I'm trying to order and she's telling me I can't order because she doesn't speak English".

"So you can't take my order?"

Montgomery tried to order in English, but was told by the woman at the window - in Spanish - that she had to order in Spanish.

Constanza Yael Nordenflycht-Prado Hialeah is 99.9 Cuban go to another one tell a Cuban to speak English and good luck with that. "Mi vida, I have a auto behind you". This lady understood what I was saying but didn't want to take my order talking bout she don't speak English.

"I want to order food!" Montgomery finally gave up and left without making the order.

The employee closes the drive-through window.

"I have an order behind you", she says. A man in Montgomery's auto guessed she was going to call the cops.

"This is America. Y'all didn't take over the whole population", Montgomery shouts.

Census data shows 89 per cent of Hialeah residents speak Spanish as their first or second language.

She later wrote on Facebook that "Luisa" had given her a false name and was actually the "general manager on that shift".

Taco Bell Corp. provided this statement: "This does not meet our customer experience expectations".

"We have worked quickly to resolve with the customer to ensure this doesn't happen again", a spokesperson for the fast food chain told the media outlet.

Hialeah, a city of almost 225,000 in Miami-Dade County, is considered the city with the largest Hispanic population in the United States. It should be law that everyone know English to work here.

But there are some indications the dispute was not, in fact, related to language.

Two other Taco Bell workers approached the drive-through window when they heard the altercation, but apparently they did not try to help the client. "I contacted the manager and after explaining to her what happened all she did was apologize and say 'thank you, ' and the call was disconnected".

Montgomery, who is black, said on Facebook that she thought the episode was motivated more by racism than the inability of the worker to understand her.

"This is Hialeah, I'm sorry", she added in Spanish.
