'Relentless rains' continue as Florence almost stalls over Carolinas

The storm, which made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on Friday morning and weakened to a tropical storm hours after, caused massive damage across the US states of North and SC by felling trees, splintering buildings, trapping hundreds of people, inundating communities and knocking out power.

A man who was trapped inside his New Bern, North Carolina, home by Tropical Storm Florence spoke with Fox & Friends on Saturday.

Florence crashed ashore Friday morning in North Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane, and it has wiped out power to about 796,000 customers in that state and SC, reports CNN.

As the United States dealt with Florence, a strong typhoon tore across the northern tip of the Philippines, killing at least three people, wrecking homes and triggering landslides before heading toward Hong Kong and southern China.

A mandatory evacuation order has been put in place for anyone who lives within a mile of the banks of North Carolina's Cape Fear River and Little River.

On Saturday evening, Duke Energy said heavy rains caused a slope to collapse at a coal ash landfill at a closed power station outside Wilmington, North Carolina.

"What we want to try to do is to minimize the time that people spend in their shelters that they're in right now", Sprayberry said.

"Life-threatening storm surge will continue along portions of the North Carolina coast through today, and also along the Neuse and Pamlico Sound, where rainfall and fresh water flooding will also contribute to high water levels", the update read.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, Florence was centered about 40 miles (65 kilometers) west of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, moving west at 2 mph (4 kph), not even as fast as a person can walk.

Another individual's death was reported Friday in coastal Pender County though few details are known. The resulting flooding forced swift-water rescues and left several people dead.

"Please be safe and be smart and use your common sense", Cooper added.

Florence was a Category 3 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale with 120-mph winds on Thursday.

Police in Wilmington confirmed the mother, Lesha Murphy-Johnson, and baby Adam died, with the tot's father rescued and rushed to the hospital. First responders couldn't reach her due to debris-blocked roads.

In Kinston, a city southeast of Raleigh, two people died in the storm. Also, a 77-year-old man was apparently knocked down by the wind and died after going out to check on his hunting dogs, Lenoir County authorities said, and the governor's office said a man was electrocuted while trying to connect extension cords in the rain.

One of the towns worst affected is New Bern, which sits between the Neuse and Trent rivers in North Carolina.

They have made clear that this event is all about the water - which the storm has delivered in devastating quantity.

A couple of tornadoes are still possible through Sunday in North Carolina and northeastern SC, the NHC said.

The military is providing assistance to flood ravaged SC.

More than 20,000 people are staying in 157 emergency shelters in North Carolina, Cooper said.

In South Carolina, there were 7,000 people staying in shelters.

The White House released a photograph showing Trump seated at a desk with a phone to his ear and Vice President Mike Pence standing nearby.
