Mysterious 'security issue' forces a solar observatory to be evacuated

Authorities are staying quiet about that mysterious solar observatory evacuation in New Mexico

"[Aura] is addressing a security issue at the National Solar Observatory (NSO) facility at Sacramento Peak, New Mexico and has made a decision to temporarily vacate the facility as a precautionary measure until further notice", it said in a message on its website. The facility released a statement a week later but the situation and the cryptic messages shared via social media have given rise to a number of conspiracy theories about what exactly went down there. The observatory is about 85 miles southwest of Roswell, New Mexico, where a mysterious object crashed in 1947, launching decades of speculation about the wreckage. In an interview with local news, Sgt. Jon Emery of the Otero County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the FBI was investigating the security issue, but that they had "not contacted us". And the lockdown continues with no new information.

"We were told we had a credible threat through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and to leave", evacuee Sean Williams told the station. "We've got people up there [at Sunspot] that requested us to stand by while they evacuate", local sheriff Benny House told the Journal. "The FBI were up there. What their objective was nobody will say".

"I can tell you it definitely wasn't aliens", a spokeswoman for the National Solar Observatory, part of the Sunspot Solar Observatory consortium, told The Washington Post. "As in truly nothing, which in itself is just weird". Sunspots are regions of reduced temperatures on the sun that appear as dark spots on the surface.

Incredible drone footage has captured the first aerial look at the solar observatory at the centre of alien conspiracy theories.

NASA scientists responded that the feature the lower left edge of the sun in the image above is actually a little-understood, but frequently observed, type of solar activity called a "prominence" -a feature containing cooler, denser plasma than the surrounding 3.5-million-degree Fahrenheit corona, said Joseph Gurman, project scientist in the Solar Physics Laboratory at NASA Goddard.

The facility focuses on solar research, and its solar telescope is one of the best ground-based solar observatories in the world.

"AURA is addressing a security issue at the National Solar Observatory facility at Sacramento Peak, New Mexico and has chose to temporarily vacate the facility as a precautionary measure until further notice", read the statement. "Nothing is hidden or kept secret".

It is still unclear what led to the evacuation and closure of the facility, which is typically open to the public.
