The city of Jacksonville's statement says people have been moved to the city's public safety center as officials work to find a more permanent shelter.
None of the people rescued were injured.
"The center of Florence will approach the coasts of North and SC later today, then move near or over the coast of southern North Carolina and eastern SC in the hurricane warning area tonight and Friday, " the hurricane center said. Seventy people had to be pulled from a collapsing hotel at the height of the storm, and many more who defied evacuation orders were hoping to be rescued.
