Former British soldier jailed in Turkey for fighting against IS Joe Robinson Cascade

Joe Robinson, 25, was arrested on holiday in Turkey and accused of fighting Isis alongside the People's Protection Units of Syrian Kurdistan (YPG) - which the Turkish state considers a terrorist organisation.

A former soldier with the British army who fought for Kurdish forces against so-called Islamic State (IS) in Syria has been given a prison sentence in Turkey, his mother says.

His mother, Sharon Chimejczuk, said she had received a phone call on Friday night from an official at the British Foreign Office confirming his sentence, the BBC reported. Still, Ankara is hostile to the YPG because of its links with the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which is fighting for Kurdish autonomy in Turkey.

He maintains he was helping forces battling ISIS as a military medic.

The YPG is not banned in the United Kingdom and Robinson, from Accrington, Lancashire, said he only spent a month with them in Syria while providing medical support to civilians.

He spent four months in a Turkish jail but was released on bail in November previous year.

"The situation is just so sad and ridiculous".

Following Robinson's arrest, the Kurdistan Solidarity Campaign said: "Unfortunately, Joe has gone on holiday to Turkey not realising the kind of state it has now become".

"Joe is a hero to all who value peace and freedom against the dark forces of oppression, enslavement, rape and terrorism which IS represent", a statement said.

A court in the western city of Aydin sentenced him for "membership in a terrorist organisation", the private DHA news agency said.

"We stand ready to provide further consular assistance".
