Florence disaster declared in North Carolina as flooding threat grows

WATCH: Weather Channel Reporter Caught Allegedly Dramatizing Hurricane Winds, Gets Slammed Online

Evacuation orders remain in place for Horry and Georgetown counties along South Carolina's northern coast.

Authorities fear the death toll will go higher as the tropical storm crawls westwards across SC.

It is now a tropical storm with top sustained winds of 90 miles per hour (150 kph), but a gust of 112 miles per hour (180 kph) was reported just offshore.

"The flood danger from this storm is more immediate today than when it made landfall 24 hours ago", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said on Saturday. Some other parts of SC could see rainfall totals of up to 15 inches, forecasters said.

Tropical Storm Florence yesterday trudged inland, flooding rivers and towns, toppling trees and cutting power to almost a million homes and businesses as it dumped huge amounts of rain on North and SC, causing five deaths.

The Marines, the Coast Guard, civilian crews and volunteers used helicopters, boats and heavy-duty vehicles Saturday to rescue hundreds of people trapped by Florence's onslaught, even as North Carolina braced for what could be the next stage of the disaster: widespread, catastrophic flooding inland.

Florence already has set a North Carolina record for rainfall totals, exceeding that of Hurricane Floyd, which struck in 1999 and caused 56 deaths.

The figure included a woman and her baby killed when a tree fell on their house, while a sixth fatality occurred in SC. A 78-year-old man was electrocuted attempting to connect extension cords while another man perished when he was blown down by high winds while checking on his hunting dogs, a county spokesman said.

Strong winds have got nothing on this tough guy. The man's family found his body Friday morning, according to Dail.

Local authorities reported a death in Pender County when downed trees prevented emergency units from reaching a woman with a medical condition.

Forecasters say the center of the eye of Florence has made landfall near Wrightsville, North Carolina. More than 60 people had to be rescued in another town as a cinderblock motel collapsed at the height of the storm's fury.

Energy Secretary Rick Perry says the US electricity sector has been well prepared for Hurricane Florence even as hundreds of thousands of homes lose power in the storm. The Little River, the Cape Fear, the Lumber, the Neuse, the Waccamaw and the Pee Dee were all projected to rise over their banks, flooding cities and towns. More ppl now face a threat than when the storm was offshore.

Governor Cooper has cautioned people in affected areas against leaving safe shelters to return home to inspect damage to their homes.

The storm dumped "epic" amounts of rain on North and SC as it trudged inland on Saturday. That's enough to fill the Chesapeake Bay or cover the entire state of Texas with almost 4 inches (10 centimetres) of water, he calculated.

The hurricane was downgraded to a tropical storm on Friday evening, and the National Weather Servicesaid early Saturday that it was "slowly weakening".

Homes and roads have been utterly submerged by the barrage of rain caused by the remnants of hurricane Florence - now a tropical storm. "I have no money, no job, no connections", Tony Clower, a homeless Kinston, North Carolina, resident, told the Asheville Citizen-Times.

Along with this projection, NHC warned of "life-threatening" storm surges and floods throughout both North Carolina and SC.

In New Bern, population 29,000, flooding on the Neuse River left 500 people in peril. "Nobody expected this", a rescued resident, Tom Ballance, toldThe Weather Channel.

According to Gov. Cooper, rescue operations are underway across the state.

Tornadoes remain a threat, with the NHC saying that "a few tornadoes are possible in southeastern North Carolina and northeastern SC".

23 aviation rescues, and counting. Super Typhoon Mangkhut was expected to hit an area in the Philippines on Saturday that would affect more than 5 million people.
