AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon launch new authentication systems

'Big Four' US Carriers Create Project Verify, the “Future of...

AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile US and Verizon have launched the Mobile Authentication Taskforce, which will be demonstrating prototype systems and services at Mobile World Congress Americas.

The information will be loaded into a Verify app which will log the user into other apps or online websites without the need for entering authentication details.

Unfortunately, an increasing number of data breaches have left consumers exposed. Two-factor authentication is one solution to help safeguard these accounts, but even it can be foiled in the right circumstances.

"Addressing user authentication-related risks could help safeguard consumers from attacks created to acquire login credentials and mobile phone numbers for use in fraudulent schemes such as phishing and social engineering", the group said in its announcement.

Prepare to hear much more about Project Verify and the Verify app in the future.

The Taskforce, which is staffed by and has the support of AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon, covering approximately 98 percent of the USA mobile-using populace, has been formed in the wake of numerous security breaches - some of which, ironically, rely on the ability to fraudulently convince a mobile provider to port a mobile number to a new SIM without the owner's permission, allowing the attacker to take advantage of insecure SMS-based second-factor account recovery systems. We were unable to use this app, as it is not available just yet, but it will be in the near future it seems. That would put the burden on the handset's security and require the user to setup a biometric barrier, PIN, or similar option.
