It's still developing Rosetta, and Facebook acknowledges that it needs to support many more languages. Memes have become a great source to entertain people, convey a message or any other objective on the social media platform. Rosetta is claimed to be are living now, extracting text from 1 billion photography and video frames per day across each and every Fb and Instagram.

According to a post published on its official blog, Facebook has identified offensive memes and small videos with text overlays as the target, and has developed an AI called Rosetta to sift through billions of images in real-time - uploaded on Facebook and Instagram - for identifying hate speech and offensive content. As a large number of posts are being posted on the social media, Facebook's moderators aren't able to review the content of the memes while they are being posted, creating a lot of fuss related to offensive posts. In conclusion, the company says it is also working on extending the text recognition system to other languages that don't feature the Latin alphabet data set.

Rosetta's intelligence starts with a two step process: detecting images that might potentially contain text and then recognising what the text in the image actually is. Such tools are being used on various platforms and, the technology isn't new. The variety and the number of images can be a big challenge for the social media platform.

[Image: courtesy of Facebook] Now, though, Facebook says it has a new arrow in its quiver-a tool known as Rosetta that uses machine learning to better understand text embedded in imagery or videos.

Facebook has struggled in the past to adequately identify hate speech or misleading information and in documents seen by Motherboard, Facebook's own training material incorrectly said that an image of the 2010 quake in Jeiegu, China was a picture of a Myanmar genocide. New tools are now being worked on that the company hopes will do an even better job at that task.

For over a year now, Facebook has been under the scanner for the role its played in providing a platform for fake news and hate speech.
