Man charged with attempted murder after Westminster crash

A 29-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly driving a vehicle through crowds outside Parliament.

Salih Khater, of Highgate Street, Birmingham, will appear in court facing two counts of attempted murder, following the incident outside the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday.

Salih Khater allegedly drove at a group of pedestrians and cyclists before swerving and heading at police officers.

Salih Khater, a United Kingdom national of Sudanese origin and from the Birmingham area, was arrested at the scene in London by armed officers.

He then allegedly crashed into barriers outside the Palace of Westminster.

One injured person was treated at the scene and two were taken to local hospitals, where they were treated and released.

Khater is being charged under the Criminal Attempts Act 1981.

Police said that was an attempt to murder police officers.

The case is being treated as terrorism, a spokesperson for the Met Police added.

Footage aired on BBC News showed the car's approach towards Parliament, where it crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with cyclists before entering a small road and crashing into a security barrier.
