Ben Stokes catches Virat Kohli after India fightback

Virat Kohli Pleased With Training Session Says

But Kohli, speaking to reporters at Trent Bridge on Friday, was in defiant mood.

Preview, 3rd Test: A desperate Virat Kohli-led Indian team will be hungry to keep themselves alive in the five-match Test cricket series against hosts England when they square-off in the third Test at the Trent Bridge starting on 18 August. The ball did not hoop around corners like it had last week but this was still a bold, purposeful day's cricket from the visitor.

Ben Stokes of England collides with India batsman Shikhar Dhawan.

Just as England's frustration was beginning to peak, Rahane flashed an edge off Broad, with Alastair Cook somehow clinging on to a fantastic reaction catch at first slip, falling to his left to intercept the ball one-handed.

Unfortunately for India, neither batsman reached three figures with Kohli - who made a brilliant first Test century in England in the series opener at Edgbaston - dismissed when he edged an intended drive off an Adil Rashid leg-break to Ben Stokes at slip. His keeping, many say, isn't the best but even Karthik isn't Wriddhiman Saha either.

So did Joe Root make the right decision at the toss and did India get their team selection spot on?

If Pant gets his maiden Test cap in Nottingham, that means Dinesh Karthik will be shown the door.

Indian batsmen showed great improvement from the previous two Tests to take the team to 307/6 at the end of day one of third Test against England. Whatever it was, it worked.

It was a fitting way for India to honour former captain Ajit Wadekar, whose death aged 77 was announced on Wednesday, as were the black armbands they wore in memory of the first India skipper to enjoy a Test series victory in England, back in 1971.

Dhawan left the ball well, played it late and still gathered runs at a good clip. It was only after the first drinks break that England broke through, Chris Woakes making the difference. A few outswingers followed by a surprising inswinger does the trick that leaves Rahul confused. But Chris Woakes, coming one change, had both in quick succession and when Cheteshwar Pujara threw his wicket away with lunch just a delivery away, India were once again under the pump.

At this stage, things were evenly poised and a wicket would have tipped the balance England's way. Instead, Kohli and Rahane took control. Today the India batting looked more stable, the batsmen more composed and much bolder. Happy faces in the dressing room. "He's an attacking bowler who bowls good lines and lengths". India added 107 runs in the second session, without the loss of a wicket, and suddenly it was England who looked anxious in the field.

India chugged along merrily after tea, Rahane dropped once on 57 by James Anderson at point, although it was a hard chance.

Kohli, playing with a back injury, didn't put a foot wrong during his 152-ball stay at the crease and it was his 159-run stand for the third wicket with Ajinkya Rahane that fashioned the first sense of authority by an Indian pair in this series.
