Apple to roll out entry-level MacBook in September

The low-cost MacBook is estimated to have a shipment volume of around eight million units in 2018 and is expected to undermine demand for first-tier competitors' similar devices. The 12-inch MacBook now starts at $1,299. Much like the rumoured new affordable 6.1-inch LCD iPhone, this new MacBook Air could be an entry-level model that helps make it more affordable.

Apple is widely expected to launch three new iPhones next month but according to a recent report from DigiTimes, that's only the tip of the iceberg. Yup, not one but two new MacBook models then.

According to the report, the new MacBook will contain a 13-inch screen and was originally planned to launch late previous year but was delayed due to problems with Intel's 10-nanometer chip manufacturing problems.

It looks like we'll finally get the promised AirPower wireless charging pad Apple showed off at its iPhone X launch even last September. Unfortunately, we know nothing more about this laptop's capabilities that would hint toward either circumstance - aside from the fact that will come running Intel's latest Kaby Lake processors. With those now set to start shipping in mid-2019, Apple opted to launch with the 14nm Kaby Lake chips rather than delay the refresh by another year. However, because of Intel, the chip manufacturer and supplier, was facing issues with the 10nm production process, it was delayed.

Apple could also discontinue the 12-inch MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro without Touch Bar, which also haven't been updated since June 2017, effectively replacing them with this single laptop meant to satisfy customers looking for an entry-level machine. That's less than the 12-inch MacBook Apple offers, but more expensive than both MacBook Airs that are now available. Apple so far has no further plan for the iPad mini series.
