Toni Kroos blasts Ozil

Mesut Ozil retired from international football after Germany crashed out of World Cup 2018

A former colleague of Mesut Ozil in the German national team, Toni Kroos was none too happy at the midfielder's assertion of racism in the camp.

"The parts in his statement that are rightly addressed are unfortunately overshadowed by the significantly higher amount of nonsense".

"Mesut is a deserved worldwide and as a player he deserved a better departure".

Ozil fell offside with German fans and was booed during pre-World Cup friendlies after he and fellow midfielder Ilkay Gundogan posed for pictures with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in May, raising questions about the pair's loyalty to Germany.

Ozil insisted that he would no longer play at global level due to the "racism and disrespect" he suffered at the hands of the German football association (DFB).

"I think he knows that there is no racism either within the national team or in the DFB".

In an emotional letter posted on his official social media accounts, the Arsenal superstar claimed; 'I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose'. Kroos also confirmed that he has no plans in following Ozil into worldwide retirement, despite the disappointment in Russian Federation.

'And he missed the chance to explain himself. "The type of criticism was certainly not always at a good level - but then you have to go through as a player".

"Nevertheless, he was completely supported by the coaching staff and the (national) team".

Ozil won 92 caps for Germany and was part of the 2014 World Cup winning team.

"I had a very good conversation with Jogi Low, who understood my thoughts and explanations".

Ozil insisted that the meeting, which took place prior to the World Cup, was neither politically motivated nor an endorsement of Erdogan, and that he would have met the Turkish president regardless of who it was.

"I will continue towards Euro 2020 and have set myself the goal of being far more successful there than in the recent past", Kroos said.

"However, he also fought for me to continue, so together we will find solutions", he added.
