Intel Official: "Brennan's Actions are Unconscionable...Trump Did The Right Thing"

Trump revokes clearance of former CIA chief Brennan

The security clearance of several other former intelligence officials, including former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, is also under review, White House press security Sarah Sanders said Wednesday.

A mini-flap developed following Sanders' briefing when White House reporters noticed the July 26 date on the president's statement.

Sanders went on to read Trump's letter, which talked about Brennan's "erratic conduct and behavior" and how benefits that may have been gleaned from consultation with Brennan are now outweighed by risks associated with his behavior.

Brennan has indeed been deeply critical of Trump's conduct, calling his performance at a press conference last month with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Finland "nothing short of treasonous".

The veteran US intelligence official is a former director of the National Security Agency, principal deputy director of national intelligence and a past CIA director. In its announcement, the White House did not point to any specific evidence that Brennan had divulged classified information - furthering the notion that the president was simply engaging in retaliation.

Mr. Trump added Mr. Brennan has a "history" that calls into question his "objectivity and credibility".

The review, which examined five other former intelligence officers including the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, was extended yesterday to Bruce Ohr, a senior official at the Justice Department.

What did Trump's statement say exactly?

On Wednesday, Comey tweeted a statement that said, in part: "Once again this president is sending a message that he will punish people who disagree with him and reward those who praise him.

And these people led it", the president said, adding that Brennan's security clearance revocation was "something that had to be done".

On Tuesday, Trump blasted former White House aide Omarosa Manigault, tweeting, "Good work by General Kelly for quickly firing that dog!" He said he had filibustered Brennan's nomination to lead the Central Intelligence Agency in 2013 "and his behavior in government and out of it demonstrates why he should not be allowed near classified information".

The current administration has questioned the loyalties of such officials, viewing their comments as attacks against the president, especially those focusing on the intelligence findings that Russian Federation intervened in the 2016 election won by Trump. Comey and McCabe no longer have security clearances, according to their representatives.

Biden's words were echoed by former ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, who said that clearance or not, Brennan "will now be just as vigorous & vigilant in defending American values".

Democrats, and even some Republicans, lined up to denounce the president's move, with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., slamming it as a "stunning abuse of power." Sen.

The political operative then turned his attention to current CIA Director, Gina Haspel, asking the top intelligence official if she would take action against the president or remain "complicit".

The action prompted bipartisan rebukes and worries that Trump was willfully infringing on his critics' First Amendment rights.

It said Mr Brennan had made "outrageous allegations" against the administration.
