Northwestern Memorial ranked best hospital in IL

Mayo Clinic Hospital, Phoenix, Arizona is again ranked No. 1 in Arizona and the Phoenix metro area, and No. 11 nationally by U.S. News & World Report.

A total of 13 hospitals in the seven-county Southeast Michigan area won recognition in the best regional category and Michigan placed a total of 21 hospitals overall in the 2018-19 report, about 10 fewer than previous year.

Just 20 hospitals out of almost 5,000 evaluated for the 2018-19 U.S. News Best Hospitalsrankings and ratings made the Honor Roll.

Other local hospitals that ranked on the state list are Sutter Medical Center, 16; Mercy San Juan Medical Center, 34; Mercy General Hospital, tied at 34; and Sutter Roseville, 43.

Hospitals were ranked on a number of factors, including survival and readmission rates, patient experience, patient safety and nursing quality, among other measures.

This is the 29th year of the magazine's rankings, which officials with U.S. News say are meant to help patients make informed decisions about where they go for medical care.

U.S. News assembled the rankings with RTI International.

This year, a total of 158 hospitals were nationally ranked in at least one specialty.

If hospitals do not rank among the top 50 in a specialty, they receive marks such as high performing, average, below average, unranked, ineligible or no scorecard. Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak was recognized 30th in orthopedics.
