Maryland Terrapins accept responsibility for mistakes made in death of Jordan McNair

Maryland president Wallace Loh and athletic director Damon Evans took responsibility for the June death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair, 19, during a press conference held Tuesday in College Park, Maryland.

In the wake of ESPN's reports, Evans had expressed extreme concern about the allegations, and Loh, who called the allegations "disturbing", said the university "would retain an external expert to undertake a comprehensive examination of our coaching practices in the football program, with the goal that these practices reflect - not subvert - the core values of our University".

"Some of the actions of our athletic training staff - not the coaching staff, the athletic training staff - they basically misdiagnosed the situation", Loh said.

"I am blessed for the relationships I have built and wish nothing but success for our team", Court wrote, in part, in a farewell letter he tweeted after the news conference that also said he had been "deeply impacted" by McNair's death.

McNair collapsed on the field on May 29 after a team workout and died June 13.

Evans said McNair "did not receive appropriate medical care" and the "emergency response plan was not followed".

The final report into McNair's death, which is being compiled by a team of sports-medicine experts, is expected by September 15. An attorney for the McNair family said early findings showed the football and training staff did nothing to treat the player. "For me, that was enough to say, 'I need to come and personally apologize'". "I have looked into the eyes of a grieving mother and father and there is simply nothing good enough". Other safeguard actions that should have been taken were not.

Alongside the report into McNair's death, the school is tasking a four-person commission, including two retired judges, with probing bullying allegations in the football program. Evans said the school has since fired head strength and conditioning coach Rick Court, though since then, multiple reports have said that Court resigned and the two sides reached a financial settlement.

Maryland head coach DJ Durkin has been placed on administrative leave while the team investigates claims Durkin and members of his staff abused and humiliated players.

The university said it is conducting an independent review. A fourth member, yet to be named, was identified only as a "retired and respected football coach and athletic administrator from outside the university".
