Syria weapons depot blast kills 12 civilians

Syrian blast kills 18

Syrian opposition activists say an explosion in the country's north has killed at least 18 people and wounded many others. Gen. Suheil al-Hassan, arrived in northern Syria to spearhead what they called the "Dawn of Idlib" operation.

Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor, said the death toll could rise as dozens were still missing.

An AFP correspondent at the site in Sarmada in Idlib province near the Turkish border said the explosion of unknown origin caused two buildings to collapse.

"The explosion occurred in a weapons depot in a residential building in Sarmada", said the head of the Britain-based monitor, which relies on a network of sources inside Syria. The cause of the blast wasn't immediately known.

Rescue workers used bulldozers to clear the rubble and rescue trapped people.

Numerous victims were women and children who were buried in the rubble when the explosion collapsed two five-story buildings in the village of Sarmada near the Turkish border.

An opposition media collective known as the Smart news agency, said the dead included civilians as well as members of the al-Qaida-linked Levant Liberation Committee.

Most of Idlib is controlled by rebels and hardlime groups led by Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, but the Daesh group also has sleeper cells in the area.

In recent months, the Syrian government, backed by Russian Federation and Iran, has made major advances in its offensive against a number of rebel and jihadist groups across Syria.

While some have been claimed by Islamic State, most have been the result of infighting between other groups.
