Former Brazil and Real Madrid great Ronaldo is now in hospital in Ibiza recovering from pneumonia.

The 41-year-old World Cup victor was diagnosed after falling ill on Friday and was rushed to the Can Misses Hospital on the Spanish island of Ibiza.

The former Barcelona and Real Madrid player remains in intensive care and but was "evolving favourably", unnamed hospital sources told the newspaper.

Staff at both hospitals refused to give an update on the 41-year-old's health for privacy reasons when contacted by Diario de Ibiza.

Ronaldo was in the public hospital until midnight on Friday, when he requested a discharge and entered the private clinic in Ibiza.

Pneumonia affects the lungs and is caused by bacterial infection.

During his glittering career Ronaldo won the FIFA World Player of the Year award three times, in 1996, 1997, and 2002.
