Back Trump on Iran sanctions, urges USA envoy

Ambassador Johnson wrote in the Sunday Telegraph urging the US and UK to have stronger relationship

The U.S. ambassador in London is urging Britain to back President Donald Trump in pulling out of the Iran nuclear agreement, saying a united front is the best way to persuade Tehran to change its course.

Trump announced on May 8 that he would abandon the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a landmark nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers - the U.S., the UK, France, Russia, China and Germany.

"It is clear that the danger from Iran did not diminish in the wake of the [2015 Iran] deal", Johnson wrote. "Far from becoming a more responsible member of the global community, as we had all hoped, Iran grew bolder". "We think this is really important, sticking to a deal a number of partners have agreed to", he said. "We are asking global Britain to use its considerable diplomatic power and influence and join us as we lead a concerted global effort toward a genuinely comprehensive agreement".

The US position was further undermined by an unnamed United Kingdom minister who accused Trump of simply throwing "red meat" to his support base, calling the sanctions strategy counter-productive, according to the Telegraph.

London has made clear it is committed to the JCPOA, but is open to talking to the USA about ways to address shared concerns about Iran's regional activities.

The historic deal, backed by the US, Russia, and China, and negotiated by the European Union, saw the lifting of economic sanctions against Iran for ditching its nuclear program.

Abadi on Tuesday said Iraq would reluctantly comply with sanctions against Tehran which took effect the same day.

A second batch of bans will be re-imposed in November with the aim of curtailing Iran's oil exports and shipping sectors.

Several European companies have suspended plans to invest in Iran in light of the US sanctions, including oil major Total (TOTF.PA) as well as carmakers PSA (PEUP.PA), Renault (RENA.PA) and Daimler (DAIGn.DE).
