436 people sickened in outbreak linked to McDonald's salads

Doctors Urge UK to Ban Fast Food Restaurants From School Zones

The foodborne outbreak linked to McDonald's salads is growing and has now sickened 436 people in 16 states, including CT, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That number increased to 436 this week.

Of the hundreds sickened, 20 were hospitalized with severe symptoms.

The cyclospora parasite causes intestinal illness in people who consumed contaminated food or water.

Other symptoms of cyclosporiasis include loss of appetite, weight loss, cramps, bloating, gassiness, nausea and fatigue, the CDC said. Vomiting, headache, fever, body aches and flu-like symptoms can also occur.

This isn't the first time this summer Americans have gotten ill from greens.

Health officials in Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin all report they now have cases of people infected by the Cyclospora parasite that they believe came from having eaten lettuce in salads at McDonald's. However, the patients in Connecticut, Michigan, Tennessee, and Virginia bought their salads in IL while traveling, and the Florida patient bought the salad in Kentucky.

The cyclospora outbreak related to McDonald's salads continues to spread, according to Thursday's updates from the FDA and the CDC. "The investigation is ongoing, and FDA is working to determine the sources of the ingredients that were in common to the salads served at McDonald's".

Forty-one people have been sickened from McDonald's salads contaminated with a parasite a week after the last update, raising the total number of illnesses to more than 400.

McDonald's voluntarily stopped selling salads in more than 3,000 locations throughout the country on July 13, until it can switch to another lettuce-blend supplier. Fresh Express was not identified as the salad mix supplier until August 1.

Illnesses are usually reported within six weeks, so illnesses that started after June 21 may not be reported yet, the CDC said.
