Make that a double: doctors assume you are lying about drink

Doctors believe just 40 per cent of patients are honest about their alcohol intake

Research for the insurer Direct Line found that 71 per cent of Global Positioning System believe that fewer than half of their patients accurately represented their drinking. One in seven (14 per cent) Brits didn't tell the truth about their consumption because they didn't feel it was relevant and the same number were anxious their doctor would judge them.

Polling of nearly 200 Global Positioning System found they were unlikely to believe patients when they grilled them on their lifestyle habits.

Doctors will on average double the amount of alcohol patients say they have to get a more accurate figure.

Morgan continues: "Direct Line Life Insurance offers an affordable way for families to help look after loved ones financially if someone passes away, paying out a lump sum, to help deal with every day money concerns such as household bills, childcare costs and mortgage payments".

The company also surveyed 2,000 British adults and found that 14% admitted that they did not tell the truth about their alcohol consumption because they did not feel it was relevant and the same number were anxious their doctor would judge them.

Another 46% estimate that patients drink twice the amount they admit to.

Paul Scholes sends message to Man United fans about Jose Mourinho
Leicester manager Claude Puel must similarly decide whether to include Jamie Vardy and Harry Maguire. United are at Brighton & Hove Albion next Sunday.

Others said they simply did not keep track of the amount.

Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, Chairman of the Royal College of Global Positioning System, said family doctors were not "killjoys" and that it was best to tell them the truth. "But patients should be reassured that Global Positioning System are medical professionals, highly trained to have sensitive, non-judgemental conversations about anything that might be affecting their overall health and wellbeing", she said.

Do you always tell the truth when asked about how much alcohol you consume?

Helen Clark, deputy director of drugs, alcohol and tobacco at Public Health England, added: "It's all too easy for the amount of alcohol you drink to creep up on you".

A parallel survey of adults found many had little idea how much they were drinking - and even less idea what consitutes a safe limit.

National guidelines advise a limit of 14 units a week on a regular basis - about six pints of beer or six glasses of wine - and have at least two alcohol-free days a week.
