Kent woman jailed for drinking on flight to Dubai

An English dentist who took a pleasure trip to Dubai says she was jailed for three miserable days along with her 4-year-old daughter after she drank a complimentary glass of wine on the flight.

When Holman landed, an official informed her that her visa had expired and said she had to return to the United Kingdom immediately, she told The Sun.

Ms Holman said things turned for the worst when the official began questioning whether she had been drinking.

Dr Holman had travelled to the country several times before on the visa - which had not expired - so assumed it was fine.

The official then told her that her visa was only valid for a single visit, and that she'd have to return to London.

While her little girl was allowed to head home, Holman remains in Dubai until her legal case is settled.

She was thrown into a "baking hot and foul smelling", detention facility at the airport and after being denied a toilet her daughter was forced to use the cell floor, the Sun newspaper reports.

The 44-year-old from Sevenoaks was arrested after being questioned about whether she had drunk alcohol by an immigration official at Dubai International Airport.

The dentist claims that a guard at the prison cell tried to rip out her hair extensions during her detention, which lasted three days.

I thought we looked like a proper team in the second half. "We can't just think that it's a big game today, so we'll turn up". That's the reason I gave him the armband'. "They are best mates so they can take the blame together".

Although she has now been released from detention, Ms Holman faces being held for up to a year while she waits for her case to be settled.

She claims in the cell, lights were left on all night and neither mother or daughter ate for the entire time as the "food smelled like rotting garbage". "I expect that we will soon see airlines being sued for damages and losses incurred by their passengers when they are arrested". "We were not even told". So far this situation has cost me around £30,000 in legal fees, expenses and missed work.

She was released on bail and told her passport would remain confiscated until the case was concluded.

Her partner Gary, who was to home in Kent with their other children Suri, nine, and Noah, aged eight, knew nothing about what was happening and was terrified.

"I told him I had a glass of wine on the flight", Holman said.

Radha Stirling, chief executive of Detained in Dubai, said: "The UAE maintains a deliberately misleading facade that alcohol consumption is perfectly legal for visitors". "Tourists can not be blamed for believing that the Emirates are tolerant of western drinking habits, but this is far from reality", says an official with the NGO.

"It is wholly illegal for any tourist to have any level of alcohol in their blood, even if consumed in flight and provided by Dubai's own airline". It is illegal to consume alcohol at a bar, a hotel and a restaurant and if breathalysed, that person will be jailed'.

Ms Stirling called on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the UK Government generally to do more to "protect" British nationals, and claimed airlines were "complicit" and needed to be held "accountable".

The Foreign Office and Emirates have been contacted for comment.
