Discord Goes Up Against Steam With New Game Store

Discord launches app store with major games, indies and exclusives

Discord is also building a system for developers to submit games for consideration, and will take a 30% cut of sales, which is no different from what Valve charges developers putting their games on Steam. The Discord app now has a storefront where you will find a curated list of games available for purchase, and launch them from within the app.

"You ever been in one of those smaller boutique book shops with recommendations from employees written on little note cards?"

"This Nitro boost, store experience and library will make it easier to find, share, and jump into games with friends, all in the same place you already hang out", the company said in a release. "We generally focus on newer titles for the Retail store and "games you may have missed" for the Nitro subscription".

It's game time for Discord, the gaming community used to bring together some 150 million gamers that has now chose to get into, well, actual games. Unlike Steam's new most anything goes policy, the store will be curated by Discord. It's adding a Universal Library tab that can launch "any" of your games through Discord, even if they require go-between launchers.

Discord today announced that the company has started beta testing a new digital game store with 50,000 of its Canadian users. Games in this section will generally be exclusive to the service for 90 days, at which point developers are free to use Steam or other stores to distribute their titles. Those will be indie games Discord has helped bring to life. The feature is now being tested among a small batch of Canadian users, so their feedback will likely shape the Discord Store's development moving forward.

We [The Discord Team] 'll be showcasing a variety of titles that we think you'll like. Although these games have won rave reviews from critics, they also aren't huge "triple-A titles".

Simply called the "Store", Discord's marketplace will be accessible by visiting the app's home page and selecting the appropriate menu option.

The Verge reports the Discord Store won't house the same number of games as, say, Steam, but will instead aim for a "local bookstore" catalogue of staff-picked choices. Nitro subscribers will get access to games such as Saints Row: The Third and Metro: Last Light Redux, among others.
