West Nile Virus found in Perth County mosquitoes

MDH says there were 30 West Nile cases last year and 83 the year before.

Several local health departments have issued warnings urging residents to stay safe, especially after deaths were confirmed in Iowa, Texas and North Carolina. The trap was part of the county's routine West Nile Virus Vector Surveillance testing.

For more information on West Nile Virus, please visit the Public Health Agency of Canada website at: http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/wn-no/index-eng.php or call the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit at 519.355.1071.

Anyone with the sudden onset of these severe symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

West Nile virus is transmitted from birds through bites by the Culex pipiens mosquito. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that one in 150 people infected develop a serious illness that affects the central nervous system.

August and September are traditionally the peak times for virus transmission of the mosquitoborne virus.

New Jersey health officials report that the state has seen its first case of West Nile virus in a human this year.

Health departments have also encouraged residents to remove items from the outside of their home that contain water - such as buckets or pet dishes - because it can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Most people infected with the virus don't show symptoms, but those who have a reaction may experience fever, nausea, headaches and muscle aches for a few days or weeks. Of those who develop a serious illness from the virus, one in 10 die, according to officials.
