Ben Stokes trial: Cricketer admits throwing 'multiple punches' during brawl

Stokes arrives at court on Friday morning alongside his wife

Mr Ali, of Bristol, is on trial with Mr Stokes at the city's crown court.

The fight took place several hours after England had played a one-day worldwide against the West Indies at the city's County Ground.

The cricketer said he consumed about three or four pints of lager and five or six vodka and lemonades on the evening.

But, he maintained Mr Ali and Mr Hale made homophobic comments outside the club in the Clifton triangle area of Bristol during the early hours of 25 September previous year.

Mr Ali has also denied a charge of affray while Ryan Hale, 27, was acquitted of the same charge on Thursday.

Mr Ali is alleged to have threatened Mr Stokes' England teammate Alex Hales with a bottle during the altercation, while it is claimed Mr Hale broke off a metal pole from a nearby road sign after being allegedly knocked out by Mr Stokes.

Mr Corsellis asked: "Mr Stokes, you are just in front of the jury, trying to cover up your actions". You are lying to the jury about the cigarette.

"You didn't suffer from memory loss problems, so how can you not remember striking Mr Ali with such force, rendering him unconscious?"

Mr Ali denied being the "initial aggressor" in the incident and replied "definitely not" when asked if he had been looking for a fight.

Canadian police say at least 4 dead in shooting
The incident in the town of Fredericton is said to be "ongoing". "Doors are locked and everybody's inside", he said. She also reported that people were being escorted out of the area by police.

Under cross-examination by Mr Ali's defence counsel, he was questioned whether he had misheard what was being said.

"I was told by Mr Ali along the lines of "Shut the f*** up or I will bottle you".

Stokes, 27, admitted throwing punches, which Ali told the court had left him with a head injury that had affected his memory of the night.

Mr Ali said the last thing he remembered before waking up in the road was "backing away from Mr Stokes, and getting him into a headlock".

Asked if he was hiding recollections of the night, he said: "No, all my actions were in self-defence and fearing for my safety".

Mr Corsellis asked: "Were you enraged?" However this incident started, when you saw Mr Ali had a bottle and that he was threatening to Alex Hales and hit Kai Barry on the shoulder, you chose to get involved and after you had been on the ground and he (Mr Ali) disarmed you thought, "I am going to show you what violence is" and you thought, "I am going to retaliate and I am going to punish you and hit you out of revenge". "Is that not the truth?"

When the officer replies in the affirmative, Stokes replies: "There will be?"

Stokes told the jury he stepped in after telling the men to stop, but that he had "significant memory blackout" about exactly what they had said to the couple.
