Suzuki Motor, Mazda, Yamaha admit false emissions data

Mazda Suzuki Yamaha improperly tested fuel economy and emissions

Japan's Suzuki Motor, Mazda, and Yamaha have admitted using false emissions data for some vehicles, the transport ministry said Thursday, in the latest product quality scandal to hit the country's auto sector.

The government had ordered the automakers to make checks after revelations of improper testing at Subaru Corp and Nissan Motor Co past year.

According to Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Japan, Suzuki, along with Mazda and Toyota have accepted to having cheated on the emissions tests and submitted a report of samples of manufactured vehicles selected during the quality assurance process. The ministry looked at tests conducted over different periods at all three automakers. Suzuki said almost half of its 12,819 new vehicle inspections involved improper inspections at its three plants.

Suzuki Motor CEO Toshihiro Suzuki (2nd R) bows with other executives during a news conference in Tokyo, Japan August 9, 2018.

The companies admitted incomplete emissions tests were done on some of its vehicles, but their officials certified the results as though the tests had been administered fully.

A total of 30 models, including those whose no longer being produced, were subject to the investigation.
