Hackers hijack PGA servers, demand Bitcoin ransom

Matthew Fitzpatrick at the 100th PGA Championship

Ahead of major championships, challenges often arise for organizations like the PGA of American. The course can be disliked.

Computer hackers have struck PGA of America servers at this week's 100th PGA Championship, demanding a Bitcoin ransom to unlock files without risking data not easily replaced, Golfweek's website reported.

The PGA of America has not publicly commented on the issue. In addition to hacking crucial information regarding the aforementioned golf championship, the hackers were also able to get hold of files regarding the upcoming Ryder Cup in France. But a Golfweek report Wednesday marks a new challenge.

The files in question contained material for this week's PGA Championship and Ryder Cup promotional banners, logos for print and digital communications.

Tournament staff discovered Tuesday their files had been compromised when a message told them their network had been hacked and information files encrypted, with any attempt to unlock the files risking their permanent loss, according to Golfweek. "All files on each host in the network have been encrypted with a strong algorithm". They also included logos for future PGA titles.

The hackers have stated their motive, including providing a Bitcoin wallet number for the PGA.

"We exclusively have decryption software for your situation".

An anonymous source for the PGA told Golfweek that the organization has no plans to meet the hackers' demands.
