3 life terms for shooter in Kansas hate crime

Man sentenced to life for hate crime shootings of Indian men in Kansas bar

A Kansas man was handed three consecutive life sentences on federal hate crime charges Tuesday for fatally shooting an engineer from India and wounding two others during a confrontation at a bar previous year.

Addressing Purinton in her victim-impact statement, Ms Dumala said if Purinton could have kept his anger inside and spoken to her husband softly, "Srinu would have been more than happy to share his background and help you understand that not every brown-skinned person is suspicious or evil, but kind, smart and contributing to America".

".(U) se the time that is being given to you to educate yourself and inform others who are still out in the open and stop them from killing innocent people as you did - choosing violence over kindness", she added. His Aug. 7 sentence will run consecutively to another life sentence Purinton previously received for first-degree murder in Johnson County District Court in Kansas.

Aside from the federal charges, Purinton pleaded guilty in March to premeditated first-degree murder and two counts of attempted premeditated first-degree murder.

Adam Purinton, a US Navy veteran had fatally shot Kuchibhotla, who hailed from Hyderabad and wounded two others in a racially motivated hate crime at a sports bar in Kansas City in the United States on February 22, 2017.

He said he fired on the two men, who worked as engineers at GPS-maker Garmin, thinking they were Iranian.

"The crimes at issue in this case are detestable", Sessions said.

"My husband was more than what you chose to address him as".

Expect to get to know some of Cleveland's top players in a way that goes beyond what they do between the lines. It's make-or-break time for head coach Hue Jackson and number one overall draft pick Baker Mayfield .

While we can not undo the irreparable harm that this defendant has done, some measure of justice for the victims' families has been achieved. Sitting at the table to his left were Ian Grillot and several other patrons as well as Kuchibhotla and Madasani.

On Tuesday, the federal court handed Purinton a further three consecutive life sentences.

Witnesses said Purinton was asked to leave the bar after he verbally harassed Kuchibhotla and Madasani, at one point yelling at them, "Get out of my country".

The 53-year-old pleaded guilty to three federal hate-crime charges, which alleged he targeted the men "because of their race, color and national origin", according to a statement from the Department of Justice.

Purinton was escorted from the bar but returned a short time later - this time armed with a handgun. Purinton then drove home, changed his shirt, wrapped a scarf around his face, retrieved a semi-automatic pistol and drove back to the restaurant's patio in his truck.

Purinton said he "targeted and shot Kuchibhotla and Madasani due to their race, color and national origin" at his federal guilty-plea hearing, according to a Justice Department statement.

Purinton was arrested later in Missouri after he allegedly told a bartender he was running from police because of the shooting.

"I have shared Srinu's story to highlight the goodness in him with the hope that others will emulate his life and not that of the man who killed him", she said.
