Plastic Surgeons Now Dealing with 'Snapchat Dysmorphia'

Plastic surgeons say more patients coming in with 'Snapchat dysmorphia'

Photo editing technology only used to be available to celebrities, but now the general population has access to enhancement software at the touch of a button.

The thought behind their research is that by heavily editing our appearance online, social media users are feeling the need to be flawless and are losing touch with reality through the use of filters, which seemingly make everyone look ideal.

The researchers further wrote, "The pervasiveness of these filtered images can take a toll on one's self esteem, make one feel inadequate for not looking a certain way in the real world, and may even act as a trigger and lead to body dysmorphic disorder".

The phenomenon is known as "Snapchat dysmorphia", and it's causing widespread concern among experts who are anxious about its negative effect on people's self-esteem and its potential to trigger body dysmorphic disorder, a serious mental illness classified on the obsessive-compulsive spectrum.

Vashi said that the prevalence of social media is causing society to become "more and more preoccupied, obsessed with ... what we look like".

Fallout 76 won't launch on Steam
Publisher Bethesda finally confirmed this after a period of silence following the game's fantastic E3 2018 reveal. What's more, the B.E.T.A. will lack an NDA, meaning players are free to talk openly about everything in it.

The definition is a specific version of body dysmorphia where the sufferer over-fixates on what they deem to be flaws in their appearance, which in turn has them wanting to make themselves look like they would as if photo filters, specifically Snapchat ones, in this case, had been applied to them.

Researchers have discovered that a lot of people are impacted by the social media and want to undergo plastic surgery. However, most do plastic surgery teenagers and young people. Now, plastic surgeons say nasal and facial asymmetry is the more common concern.

The whole situation is being dubbed "Snapchat dysmorphia" and the fact it has been given a name should perhaps highlight just how prevalent it is.

They cite a recent study of adolescent girls that found that those who altered their photos more reported a higher level of concern with their bodies, and tended to overestimate their body shape and weight. Filtered selfies especially can have harmful effects on adolescents or those with BDD because these groups may more severely internalize this beauty standard.
