Prince of Wales's private art collection goes on display at Buckingham Palace

The colour, pattern and story of the cloak are said to have fascinated Prince Charles since he first saw it on display at Windsor Castle.

The exhibition, which will run through September 30, also boasts: a Johan Joseph Zoffany's painting, The Tribuna of the Uffizi, commissioned by Queen Charlotte in 1772, and the cloak of Napoleon Bonaparte, made of wool, silk and silver thread, taken from Napoleon's carriage immediately after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and later presented to the future George IV.

Rows of paintings fill the walls, while tables are filled with books, vases, trinkets and family photographs.

"It is meant to give a flavor of the Prince of Wales's owning residences and reflect his personal involvement", she told People.

The angle of the photos are different compared to Prince George's official photos, where her portrait was not visible.

And to give it even more of a personal touch, non of the pieces have explanatory text next to them to create more of visual display rather than a museum feel. "He has grown up as a passionate art lover", says Vanessa Remington, senior curator of paintings at the Royal Collection.

The pieces feature a specially painted coat of arms with the shield of the Duchy of Cornwall, the Prince of Wales's Red Dragon badge, and daffodils, the national flower of Wales. "Both are dressed in the regimental uniform of the Household Cavalry - the Blues and Royals - and are particularly good likenesses".

The prince, who visited the exhibition with his wife on Wednesday, adds: "It is a joint effort between the artist Naseer Yasna and the Turquoise Mountain woodworking team and demonstrates how the charity is reviving traditional skills in historic communities - something in which, as patron, I am enormously proud to play a part".

Prince Charles Philip Arthur George was born on November 14 1948 at Buckingham Palace - the eldest son of Princess Elizabeth, now the Queen, and the Duke of Edinburgh.
