Trump undermines North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, suggest 'aggressive' Montenegro may start WWIII

After Helsinki, Trump boasts of reinforcing NATO

Montenegro became NATO's 29th member in June 2017, marking a historic geopolitical turn toward the transatlantic alliance amid opposition from Russian Federation. During the Cold War, the main concern was the Soviet Union, but in recent years, Russia's aggressive actions in Eastern Europe have been the focus of attention.

Therefore, the prospect of a war between North Atlantic Treaty Organisation states and non-NATO states is in fact very real while the possibility of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members fighting one another in the Balkans (an unprecedented phenomenon since NATO's founding) is also one that can not be dismissed. Its charter's Article V stipulates that an attack on one ally is an attack against all.

Trump's skepticism towards Article 5 aligns with his distrust of multinational organizations in general, from the United Nations to the World Trade Organization.

After President Trump described Montenegro as a potential source of global conflict, the Montenegrin government said on Thursday that the country is proud of its friendship and alliance with the U.S., describing the relationship between the two countries as "strong and permanent".

As such, the USA president's comments not only undermined the government but could also embolden the country's pro-Russian and anti-Nato opposition. "President Trump congratulates the Montenegrin people for their resilience and their demonstrated commitment to NATO's democratic values".

"Montenegrins are not aggressive ... but the nation of fearless warriors", he said. It used to be part of Yugoslavia back when Yugoslavia was a thing, and for a short while they shared a football team with Serbia.

Rather than instigating World War III with Russia, Montenegro has had to fend off what it describes as a Russian attempt to kill its prime minister in 2016. The Senate voted 97-2 supporting its accession to #NATO. Although Montenegro was added to the alliance past year, the US president suggested that the USA will not feel obligated to step in and protect the small nation if it went to war with, say, Russia.

"He added, "#Putin will do anything to shatter the transatlantic alliance.

It now has 20 troops serving in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led training mission there.

NATO's common defence clause has only been invoked once - by America after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks conducted by Al-Qaeda. "I was just saying to myself the other day, you know, Russian Federation really helped us".

NATO's collective defense clause has been activated only once in the alliance's almost 70-year history - following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the U.S. The latest comments are a reminder that the threat of World War 3 remains a serious concern for the USA president, and one not easily dispelled.
