Rebels fine players involved in alleged Dunedin assault $16k each

That interest has been extinguished after Mafi faced a Dunedin court on Monday morning after being charged with injuring with intent to injure.

It is understood the pair were drinking at a house in south Dunedin when things turned sour and Mafi allegedly attacked Timani.

Mafi, 28, will not be allowed to play for the Rebels next season due to the fact that he is a Japanese global and falls under foreign restrictions.

He was released on bail, with the condition that he make no contact with Timani.

The Japanese global loose forward, who had a stellar season for the Rebels, was allowed to return to Australia early this week on the condition he made no contact with Timani, with his case adjourned until August 3.

Mafi was a crowd favourite in Melbourne due to his fearless ball-running and ability to break tackles, he will be missed by those who follow the Rebels.

The Rebels handed down "financial sanctions" to the both players for breaching team protocols and team management instructions - after their sides loss to the Highlanders last Saturday. Under the Rebels Disciplinary Protocol, each player has been fined the maximum $15,000 (R147 773).

"I am bitterly disappointed that an incident has occurred at the end of a season where we have taken pride in our on and off-field behaviour", Rebels chief executive Baden Stephenson said.

It will await the outcome of the current criminal process under way in New Zealand with Mafi, before deciding on further possible action under the professional player code of conduct.

The 23-year-old Fiji-born Naisarani is also in the sights of Wallabies coach Michael Cheika, signing a one-year deal with Rugby Australia as well as the Rebels Super Rugby franchise.

The $30,000 in fines will be donated to the Rugby Victoria Quilt programme - an education and participation program created to use rugby as the vehicle to prevent domestic violence.
