The person affected was an adult living in the southeastern part of the state.
North Carolina's first death and first confirmed case of West Nile virus in 2018 happened in Cumberland County, where an elderly person contracted the illness, according to the NC Department of Health and Human Services.
DHHS is not releasing more specifics on the case to protect patient confidentiality.
"These infections are rare, but this is a tragic reminder that they can be fatal", said State Public Health Veterinarian Carl Williams. About one in five people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms.
There's a high risk for West Nile virus infections right now in northeast Kansas - as well as much of the rest of the state, the Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment warns. About 1 percent of those who get West Nile will see serious damage to the central nervous system, and about 1 in 10 of those will die.

West Nile virus is a potentially life-threatening disease contracted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Other mosquito-borne viruses transmitted in the state that cause human illness include LaCrosse and Eastern equine encephalitis viruses.
Mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus have been discovered in St. Louis County.
The announcement comes after news that the city of Sacramento unintentionally heightened the risk of virus transmission in the Pocket by creating bodies of stagnant water ideal for mosquito breeding.
Use an EPA-registered mosquito repellent and apply according the manufacturer's instructions.
KDHE says there have been more than 600 cases of the most severe form of the virus so far this year and 30 people died between 1999-2017. The agency recommended using insect repellent, wearing loose-fitting clothing and avoiding skin exposure during peak mosquito feeding times at dawn and dusk in order to avoid being infected.
