More than 50,000 jobs were created in Australia in June | Leadership

Employment regains its mojo with booming growth in June

The unemployment rate was steady at 5.4 per cent, falling just 0.1 percentage points since the start of the year.

Importantly, the bulk of the jobs were full-time (+41,200), while there was more modest growth in part-time positions (+9,700).

"With 95,200 young people getting a job in the last financial year, that is the best financial result in 30 years, since 1988/89", remarked Scott Morrison, Australia's Treasurer.

"We have people who are here on student visas that too often are not here primarily to study", said Mr O'Connor. No such inquiry has ever eventuated.

However, unemployment for youth dropped by 11.3% last month, the lowest rate in the country for six years, since April 2012.

The trend unemployment rate was 5.4% in the month of June 2018, according to latest figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today.

The Federal Opposition argues the government is ignoring under-employment in Australia's jobs market.

With the participation rate - the number of people in work, or actively searching for work - ticking up, unemployment on a seasonally adjusted basis remained steady at 5.4 per cent.

Economists and policymakers have been sweating on the data, hoping continued record job creation eventually kicks stagnant wages into gear.

If this turns out to be correct, then the central bank will have two options: continue to hold the interest rate at 1.5% or slash it further.
