Arizona Trans Woman: CVS Pharmacist Refused to Fill My Hormone Prescription

CVS pharmacist fired after refusing to fill transgender woman's hormone prescription | TheHill

Hilde Hall said she had been prescribed the medication by a hormone expert prior to visiting the pharmacist, at CVS pharmacy, where she was questioned her loudly in front of other customers. "I was carrying my first prescriptions for hormone therapy", she writes on the ACLU's website.

The pharmacist did not give Hall a clear reason for the refusal, she said in a blog post describing the encounter published on the American Civil Liberties Union's website.

In June, a pharmacist at a Peoria Walgreens, based on ethical beliefs, refused to fill a woman's prescription for a medication to induce a miscarriage.

But Steve Kilar, spokesperson for the ACLU of Arizona, told Rewire.News that "the Arizona law that allows pharmacists to refuse service to customers pertains only to abortion and emergency contraception medicine, which is not what Hilde was seeking".

Hall said she was "elated" when she left her doctor's office April 24 with three prescriptions.

"I was finally going to start seeing my body reflect my gender identity and the woman I've always known myself to be", she wrote.

Hall says the pharmacist did not give her a reason for the refusal and he refused to give her back the doctor's prescription note so she could have it filled at another pharmacy.

She said she "froze" and tried to hold back her tears.

Complaint: CVS Pharmacist Refused to Fill Prescription for Transgender Woman

Although Hall acknowledged that CVS had received a ideal score from the Human Rights Campaign for its policies related to LGBTQ equality ― a fact also touted in the company's statement ― she said "measures should be in place to ensure no other customer is humiliated like I was". "It is critical that CVS ensures no one is harassed when taking a valid prescription into one of their pharmacies".

When Hall got home she spoke with her doctor, who called the pharmacist, but they still refused to fill the prescription.

"We also apologize for not appropriately following up on Ms. Hall's original complaint to CVS, which was due to an unintentional oversight, " the statement added.

She said she has contacted CVS's corporate complaint line multiple times but was ignored.

"The conduct of the pharmacist, who is no longer employed by CVS, violated company policies and does not reflect our values or our commitment to inclusion, nondiscrimination and the delivery of outstanding patient care", CVS spokesman Michael DeAngelis said in an email.

CVS said the employee was sacked, and added it had not responded to Hall's complaints because of "an unintentional oversight".

In addition to an apology from CVS, Hall also sought an assurance that they do not condone discrimination against transgender customers - or anyone else for that matter.

Hall filed a complaint on Thursday with the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy, asking CVS to publicly take action and apologize.
