We owe this to people: PM Modi urges constructive, disruption-free debate

Modi’s government has a clear majority in the 545-member lower house of parliament

Ahead of facing a no-confidence voting in Parliament today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the day is an important one in the Parliamentary democracy of India.

The Prime Minister said 28th of April this year was a historic day for India's development story as Leisang village of Manipur became the last village in the country to be connected to a power grid.

PM Modi also expressed confidence in the Members of Parliament saying that he was certain that they will rise to the occasion and ensure a constructive, comprehensive and disruption-free debate. We owe this to the people & the makers of our Constitution.

The Telugu Desam Party moved the no-confidence notice on Wednesday, after which several Opposition parties rallied behind it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will reply to the debate, is expected to use the occasion as a launching pad for the 2019 campaign. The BJP had won 282 seats on its own, garnering a simple majority in the lower house. Despite coming under severe attack, the Manmohan Singh government did not face this motion that can be moved in Lok Sabha under Rule 198 when 50 or more MPs can push for the same. Congress, the main opposition party, has been allocated 38 minutes to present its views on the motion. Meanwhile, taking a dig at Congress president Rahul Gandhi, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav tweeted, "Congress would have 38 minutes for an quake in the House".
