Celebrity Brazilian Plastic Surgeon On the Run After Patient Death

Brazilian plastic surgeon 'Dr Bumbum' on run after patient dies

Denis Furtado amassed 650,000 Instagram followers by posting pictures of his work, with the 45-year-old renowned in his home country for "performing magic" on women's bodies - notably their bottoms. Now that may all be over.

Sky News said things changed when Lilian Quezia Calixto, 46, died after going through one of Furtado's procedures to enhance her buttocks at his exclusive Barra de Tijuca neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. In Brazil, it is not considered uncommon for doctors to perform procedures like this outside of a clinical setting, although it isn't encouraged either.

Mr Steffen said the injection of synthetic biopolymers or polymers, like acrylic glass, was very risky and had caused dozens of deaths among women in Latin America, especially in Venezuela. Furtado brought her to the hospital but she died a few hours later, which is when Furtado disappeared.

Furtado is alleged to have left the hospital and is considered to be on the run. The broadcaster said Calixto had traveled some 1,200 miles from Cuiaba, Brazil for the procedure that reportedly uses the controversial acrylic glass filler. A judge has issued a warrant for his arrest.

WhatsApp takes more action against misinformation by testing forwarding restrictions
WhatsApp added in a blog post that these changes will help to keep the app as it was created to be - a private messaging app. Prakash Singh, a former senior police officer, said that " WhatsApp has become an addiction in India".

Friends of Calixto, a former HSBC bank manager, told local media she had always had a "dissatisfaction with her butt" and had undergone many other procedures to change her appearance.

Niveo Steffen, president of the Brazilian Plastic Surgery Society, criticised the home procedure.

"You can not perform plastic surgery inside an apartment", he said, according to a report in AFP "Many people are selling a dream, a fantasy to patients in an unethical way and people, weakened, are often attracted to low prices, without considering whether or not the conditions are adequate".
