Apple, Fitbit and Sonos could feel the sting of Trump tariffs

Apple Watch

It's not exactly breaking news that the USA government has been imposing trade restrictions and tariffs over the last few months, but today we caught wind of the first new regulation that appears to affect watches directly.

The rulings show that devices like these are considered data transmission machines in the list of U.S. tariff codes, Reuters reports, and may be subject to a 10 percent tariff that could be passed onto consumers.

Other devices that are named alongside the Apple Watch include fitness trackers made by companies such as Fitbit and wireless speakers from Sonos.

All of this comes with a major caveat though: this entire round of tariffs is now under public comment period and won't go into effect until this fall.

Gadgets like Apple Watches, Fitbit activity trackers and Sonos speakers could be impacted by $200 billion list of U.S. tariffs on goods made in China, government rulings show.

Taylor Swift to star in Tom Hooper's Cats movie
Swift, 28, has one significant screen credit to her name: she voiced the environmentalist Audrey in the 2012 animation The Lorax. That film was nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards and won a statuette for Anne Hathaway as best supporting actress.

This is a shock to the Tame Apple Press who logically assumed that when Donald (Prince of Orange) Trump promised that Apple would be given special protection in his trade war with China he was telling the truth.

The toll from tariffs on the gadget world's smaller product lines could be significant. The three companies sell billions of dollars worth of products each year. Fitbit and Sonos alone made $2.6 billion in combined revenue a year ago.

It is possible that the products from Apple, Fitbit and Sonos no longer fall under tariff codes in the $200 billion list, trade experts said. And some of the products have been replaced by newer models that could be classified differently.

The last option could prove hard due to the thousands of codes covered, said one former US trade official.
