These sharks could live in British waters by 2050

Great White Shark swim past

And the warmer the weather gets, the more sharks we'll have in our water.

The ground-breaking research by Dr Ken Collins, former administrator of the UK Shark Tagging Programme and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, was commissioned by Nat Geo WILD to celebrate Sharkfest, a week of shark programming on this week.

There are already around 40 species of shark living off the United Kingdom coast, but climate change is likely to bring new kinds from areas like the Mediterranean and African coast.

An estimated ten million small sharks and 100,000 larger sharks from 40 species are already found in British waters. Said to be the most risky of all shark species for humans, the arrival of the Great White could be a concern.

Those species include the great hammerhead, blacktip shark, sand tiger or spotted raggedtooth shark, bigeye thresher, Longfin mako, bronze whaler or copper shark, Oceanic whitetip shark, silky shark, dusky shark, and the goblin shark.

Scientific research, carried out by the National Geographic, listed the top shark spots in the country, placing the Isle of Wight at number four, behind Cornwall, at number one, Scilly Isles, two, and Devon, three.

Villanova Basketball: Josh Hart continues to shine in the Summer League
This performance, although the Summer League is not as competitive, can not be ignored. Self-proclaimed as the Fortnite King of the NBA, Josh Hart likely took this personally.

"It's really important we work to prevent a premature extinction of these wonderful creatures".

He said: "I see no reason why not - they live in colder waters off South Africa and have a favourite food source, seals, along the Cornish coast".

Rising sea temperatures could mean that alarming ocean predators such as great white sharks could be swimming off Cornwall within 30 years, experts have warned.

The study, conducted for television channel National Geo WILD ahead of its Sharkfest season of films looking at the world's shark population, found that despite the fact there has never been a fatality from an unprovoked shark attack in Britain (a schoolteacher may have died in Hornsea, East Yorkshire, after being bitten by an unidentified shark in 1922), Britons remain wary of the creatures.

"Sadly, now many species are under threat".

A recent poll by Nat Geo WILD found four in 10 people held an irrational fear of sharks while swimming in the sea, while more than eight out of 10 thought the species had been given a bad reputation by Hollywood. Blue sharks and porbeagles have also been seen.
