G7 foreign ministers say Russian Federation must be held accountable for MH17 downing

Trump putin MH17 answers

The G7 said it condemned in the strongest possible terms the downing of flight MH17 and called for those responsible for firing or launching the Buk surface-to-air missile that hit the civilian aircraft to be held accountable.

"We are United in our support of Australia and the Netherlands, calling Russian Federation to answer for his role in this case and fully cooperate with the process of establishing the truth and achieving justice for the victims of MH17 and their loved ones", say the Ministers.

Meanwhile, foreign ministers from G7 nations have called on Russian Federation "to account for its role" in the aircraft's downing.

MH17 was carrying 298 crew and passengers, nationals of Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, Romania, South Africa, Vietnam, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

The Boeing 777 operated by Malaysia Airlines, en route from Amsterdam (the Netherlands) to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), was shot down in the sky over Donetsk region on July 17, 2014.

Global investigators said in May that the BUK anti-aircraft system used to bring down the jet belonged to the Russian military.

The Netherlands and Australia, whose citizens made up the most passengers on the airliner, both hold Russian Federation legally accountable and are demanding Moscow admit its role and cooperate with investigators.

The call came not only before the Putin-Trump summit in Helsinki today but as the Russian leader was to meet France's President Emmanuel Macron in Moscow, where he was attending the World Cup football final.

According to the statement, "in rules-based global order, responsible for such unacceptable actions, like launching a BUK missile of Russian origin that shot down a civilian aircraft must be brought to justice".

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Tuesday's fourth anniversary of the 2014 disaster was a time to keep pushing.

"Over 450 AFP have been involved since the tragedy", she said.

"Russia should not be rewarded for its bad behaviour", Ms Bishop said.

Australians Mo, Evie and Otis Maslin were on board MH17.

Russian Federation has denied any involvement in the plane's downing.

"There is a well-known style, a rough, clumsy algorithm", Russia's ambassador to Australia, Grigory Logvinov, said in a statement.

"We fully support the work of the worldwide investigation team led by the Netherlands, Australia, Belgium, Malaysia and Ukraine".

Along with France and the USA, the G7 includes Britain, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada, now holding the group's presidency.
