Rainbow Six Siege is making some changes to help weed out hate speech in the popular multiplayer shooter.
According to reports over the past few days, Rainbow Six Siege is now handing out instant bans to players attempting to type slurs into the game's chat. Unsurprisingly, the new system has divided the game's community, with some lauding Ubisoft's efforts and others saying that the new system is too heavy-handed. It seems that, upon first offense, the player is hit with a 30-minute ban that prevents them from accessing all game modes, even Terrorist Hunt (a co-op mode that can be played solo) and custom games. If the player is caught using toxic speech a second time, they get a second ban, this one lasting two hours. But Ubisoft will also operate a "three strikes and out policy" - the company says: "After three offenses: an investigation will be conducted and may lead to a permanent ban (maximum penalty)". The game's code of conduct clearly warns players that "any language or content deemed illegal, dangerous, threatening, abusive, obscene, vulgar, defamatory, hateful, racist, sexist, ethically offensive or constituting harassment" will result in "disciplinary action". It began by tracking the frequency at which racial or homophobic slurs were used by individual players.
