Media, Democrats Want Trump to Cancel Putin Meeting, or Include Others

U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton looks on as U.S. President Donald Trump holds a news conference after participating in the NATO Summit in Brussels Belgium

Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will meet on Monday in the Finnish capital Helsinki, amid tensions ranging from allegations of Russian meddling in U.S elections to clash on the Syrian war.

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia says, "We know that Trump doesn't do a lot of prep work for these meetings".

On Friday, during a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May, Trump vowed to press Putin about election interference - though he told reporters he does not expect a "Perry Mason" moment in which the Russian strongman would reverse his public denials and come clean.

"I will absolutely bring that up".

On CBS, in response to the suggestion that "a lot of people might be surprised to hear you list the European Union as a foe before China and Russia", Trump said: "No I look at them all, look, European Union is very hard ... but in a trade sense, they've really taken advantage of us and many of those countries are in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and they weren't paying their bills and, you know, as an example a big problem with Germany".

After Trump labeled the EU a "foe", Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, responded on Twitter, using one of Trump's favorite stock phrases.

Tweeting as he flew to Finland for Monday's meeting with Putin, Trump says, "No matter how well I do at the Summit" he'll face "criticism that it wasn't good enough". "And hopefully, we'll have a very good relationship with Russian Federation". Though the president has said he was "not happy" about Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, he puts the blame on his predecessor and says he will continue relations with Putin even if Moscow refuses to return the peninsula.

Mueller is investigating possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation. I mean my mother was Scotland, my father was Germany. Big banners said "Welcome Trump" and "God Bless D & M Trump" and a helicopter hovered overhead. "They had bad defenses and they were able to be hacked. It's - maybe that's a dream".

Trump has baffled his own advisers at times with his unabashed desire for strong ties with Putin, White House sources have said.

Mr Trump has said he will raise the issue of Russian election meddling with Mr Putin, in addition to Syria, Ukraine, nuclear proliferation and other topics.

Key to Putin's negotiating tactics: an insistence that Russian Federation is no longer subject to American demands or pressure.

Trump believes his discussions with Putin on Syria could yield the crude beginnings of a deal, but any agreement would be very preliminary.

Others on the USA side sought to lower expectations, attempting to downgrade the summit to just a regular bilateral meeting, given that no major achievements are likely.

Trump and his wife, Melania, are spending the weekend out of the spotlight at his Scottish golf resort at Turnberry, on the western coast, ahead of his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki on Monday.

The source said it is possible Trump and Putin agree to a working-level dialogue on cybersecurity issues. Other issues include the potential for nuclear arms talks and North Korea's nuclear challenge, given that US officials have said Russian Federation had worked in the past to help Pyongyang circumvent worldwide sanctions.

The United States, though, would rather continue its bilateral talks with North Korea.
