Kenya: Black Rhinos Die After Relocation to National Park in Kenya

Kenya's bid to save endangered black rhinos backfires after eight die in a new location

Eight critically endangered black rhinos died after being moved to a new reserve in southern Kenya, the government said Friday, doubling the number of deaths from similar operations in the previous dozen years.

The surviving translocated rhinos are also "being provided with fresh water in temporary water pans as we await the full postmortem examination report and further forensic investigations", the ministry said.

Disciplinary action will be taken if the investigation of the death indicates negligence, said Tourism Minister Najib Balala.

Paula Kahumbu, the CEO of the nonprofit organization WildlifeDirect, called the deaths "a major conservation tragedy - not just for Kenya but for all rhinos". Eight of the 11 that were moved to Tsavo East National Park, which is southeast of Nairobi, died. Fourteen of the animals were to be moved in all. "It requires extremely careful planning and security due to the value of these rare animals". Only two northern whites remain-a 28-year-old female named Najin and her 18-year-old daughter Fatu, both of whom are housed at a Kenyan animal conservancy under constant armed guard.

Transporting wildlife is a strategy used by conservationists to help build up, or even bring back, animal populations.

According to the International Union for Conservation and Nature, black rhinos are classified as critically endangered, meaning they still face a high risk of extinction in the wild.

According to WWF, black rhino populations declined dramatically in the 20th century, mostly at the hands of European hunters and settlers.

Due to decades of poaching for rhino horn, the African mammal has declined almost 98 percent since 1960, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Another organisation, Save The Rhino, in a statement termed the death of the eight rhinos as tragic, saying this should inspire more conservation efforts.

In May, three more were shot dead inside a specially-protected sanctuary in northern Kenya and their horns removed, while in March the last male northern white rhino on earth, an elderly bull named Sudan, was put down by Kenyan vets after falling ill.
