Parliament vote to reveal extent of anger over May's Brexit plan

Theresa May

Steve Baker told the paper he resigned after discovering the "establishment elite" had secretly been pursuing a plan for a much softer Brexit than the one the Department for Exiting the European Union was working on.

MPs will today vote on a series of amendments to the Customs Bill tabled by members of the European Research Group (ERG), which Mr Rees-Mogg leads, meant to scupper her plans for a "UK-EU free trade area" based on a "common rule book".

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the chairman of the ERG, told the BBC "we'll have an idea of the numbers at 10pm on Monday evening" while one ERG insider added that they were "intensely relaxed" about the number of rebels they had signed up.

"This could lead to a damaging and disorderly Brexit", she wrote.

David Davis quit as Brexit minister and Boris Johnson stepped down as foreign minister last week over May's Brexit blueprint, which would keep Britain economically close to the EU.

Mr Courts announced on Twitter he has taken the very hard decision to resign as a parliamentary private secretary (PPS) in order to vote against the government on its trade bill on Monday.

He said: "I have taken very hard decision to resign position as PPS to express discontent with Chequers in votes tomorrow".

"I can not find someone who supported leave within the Conservative MPs (Members of Parliament) who is happy with the (Chequers) proposal if you talk to them in private", Peter Bone, a Conservative lawmaker and Brexit campaigner, told Sky News.

Mr Johnson also made his first public intervention since his resignation last week, with a column in the Daily Telegraph pledging to resist "for now" the urge to "bang on about Brexit". It was dedicated to "global Britain", the slogan or theme of his two years at the Foreign Office.

Stewart Jackson, former special adviser to David Davis, said No 10 had blocked his reappointment in the role under new Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab.

There is a belief in Conservative circles that a no-confidence vote in May will have to be called by Wednesday this week as there will otherwise not be time to hold it before parliament breaks up for the summer on Tuesday 24 July.

Theresa May has appealed to warring Tory MPs to back her controversial blueprint for Brexit and avoid a disorderly withdrawal from the European Union which would damage Britain's interests.

She added: "Interestingly, what the president also said at that press conference was "don't walk away".

The prime minister also said that the taxation (cross border trade) bill, which seeks to allow the United Kingdom to implement its own customs regime after Brexit, and a related trade bill on Tuesday, were "an important part of our no-deal preparations" because both were necessary to prepare the United Kingdom for life as an independent trading nation.

Another term associated with it is the customs union which implies that all the EU countries that belong to the customs unions charge the same import duties to countries outside the EU.

Tory Brexiteers have tabled a series of amendments to the proposed legislation in an attempt to kill off Mrs May's favoured post-Brexit customs arrangements.

The main opposition Labour party has indicated it will not support the amendments, according to media reports in London Sunday night.

On Monday, MPs vote on the Taxation (Cross-Border Trade) Bill.
